Dr James D. Chalmers MBChB, PhD

James Chalmers is the Rhodes Chair of Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Oxford, and serves as a clinician-scientist in respiratory medicine and an honorary consultant. Clinical work focuses on difficult respiratory infections and bronchiectasis, and he leads a specialist clinic in that area. His research portfolio encompasses immunology, microbiome, mucociliary clearance, and translational experimental medicine in lung disease, including bronchiectasis, COPD and acute respiratory infections. He has published over 500 peer-reviewed manuscripts, chaired major European respiratory guideline panels (e.g. on bronchiectasis, COPD, COVID-19), and holds leadership roles in editorial and research committees, including being Chief Editor of the European Respiratory Journal. Chalmers chairs the EMBARC European Bronchiectasis Network (EMBARC) and has led multiple international clinical trials and major multicentre research studies with the aim of finding new therapies for bronchiectasis and related conditions.
